LLS Regatta FAQ’s - 2010
Poker Run
Q: What is a Poker Run?
A: The Leukemia Cup Poker Run is a fund-raising event where participants travel by boat to different locations or “Stops”, collecting “cards” at each location. Before setting out, boaters receive a list of participating locations and try visit as many as they can in order to collect as many cards as possible.
Q: So a Poker Run is a race?
A: Nope. Getting to a stop first doesn’t mean you’ll get better cards. As a matter of fact, you won’t even see your cards until you get back to the Poker Party so feel free to go as fast or as slow as you like.
Q: What’s a Poker Party?
A: That’s where the real fun begins. Before you set out on the Poker Run, you’ll be given a checklist of all available stops. At the end of the Run you’ll head back to Dockhopper’s Restaurant for the Poker Party. For every location marked on your checklist you’ll be dealt a poker card. You’ll then make the best 5 card draw hand out of your cards. For instance, let’s say you stopped at 7 locations. When you get back to the Poker Party you’ll be dealt 7 cards. You’ll then use those 7 cards to make the best 5 card draw poker hand possible.
Q: So the best hand wins?
A: Nope. We’ll deal hands from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Dockhoppers and keep a running tally of the top 10 hands. At 8:00 we’ll call those 10 lucky players to the Big Table where we’ll play 5 card draw, and the lowest hand each round will be eliminated. After 9 rounds we’ll have ourselves a winner.
Q: Sounds like fun, but I don’t have a boat. How can I participate?
A: Easy. All you have to do is show up at the Poker Party before 8:00 and buy a ticket for $25. You’ll only be able to draw 5 cards, but you’ll still be able to enjoy the free food and drink specials. And who knows? You just might go home a winner…

Q: How do I sign up?
A: Easy as pie. Click over to our signup page. Do it quickly before you forget…
Q: What’s in it for me?
A: Always thinking about yourself, huh? Well, it’s time to think about others for a change, Buster. Other than the good karma you’ll receive from helping a worthy cause you’ll also be able to score some cool swag for yourself. Take a look at our Sailors Pack here, to see what you can take home to mommy.
Q: I’m registered for the Regatta. Do I have to do fundraising for the LLS?
A: No, but it does add to the fun, helps a good cause, and increases your chances of winning some fabulous prizes—including the Fantasy Sail in charming Charleston, SC with Gary Jobson. Also, it’s easy—the LLS will set you up your own website! You can have your friends and relatives go to your site and donate online. Check out http://gulf.regatta.llsevent.org
Q: Alright, I’m signed up and I’ve started raising tons of sponsorship dollars. When do I bring the boat over?
A: Here’s the good news: Bay Point Marina is offering free dockage to participating boats the week of the event. Slips are available from Friday, May 14th through Sunday, May 23rd. Contact Steve Arndt at Bay Point Marina at steve@coastalmarinamgt.com for all your dockage needs.
Q: I’m interested in sponsoring the Leukemia Cup Regatta. How can I help?
A: Bless you. We couldn’t do it without people like you, so give yourself a big hug. Then click here for more information how you can help. Or, you could just send an email to our Sponsorship Chairman, Lisa Tubridy, at lisa.tubridy@navy.mil and she’ll be happy to help. She’ll even give you a hug if you like, but that’ll cost extra.
Q: How can I get tickets to the Gary Jobson event?
A: Wow. Can you believe we’re actually going to have the Gary Jobson speaking at our Kick-Off party? How cool is that? Mr. Jobson will regale us with tales of his career while we feast at the Leukemia Cup Kick-Off Party at St Andrew’s Bay Yacht Club on Friday, May 21st. Tickets are only $50 and you can get as many as you like from Steve Arndt at steve@coastalmarinamgt.com. Group discounts are available for parties of 8 or more.
Q: I’d like to attend the Kickoff at St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club. Can I do that?
A: Absolutely! The event will be held at the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club on May 21st from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The cost is only $50 per person and is open to the public. The event is free for Leukemia Cup Sponsors and participants.
Q: How can I sign up for the Golf Tournament?
A: It couldn’t be easier. Simply email Bob Harned at Robert.L.Harned@saic.com to sign up.
Q: I’d like to sail in the Regatta but I don’t have a sailboat. Can I be on the crew of a boat?
A: Sure, just send an email to Lindsay.Guthrie@lls.org with your contact info and we’ll do our best to find skippers who need additional crew members. Remember, these skippers win the Leukemia Cup by being the boat that raises the most money, so it helps if you’ve lined up some sponsorship of your own. Nobody gets a free ride! However, if you’re really that big of a cheapskate, you can try coming to Bay Point Marina on Saturday, May 22nd around 9 am for the Captains Meeting. The skippers will be finalizing their crews on Saturday morning, and you may be able to find an open seat for “rail meat”.
